The Irish Elite squad fly out to the Ukraine this morning (March 29th) for a final training camp in Kiev ahead of April’s crucial AIBA Olympic qualifiers.
The final AIBA Olympic qualifier for European male boxers will be held in Trabzon,Turkey between April 13th and 22nd.
Con Sheehan, Tommy McCarthy,Joe Ward, Adam Nolan, Ross Hickey, David Oliver Joyce and Paddy Barnes will be targeting seven Olympic places in the super-heavyweight, heavyweight, light-heavyweight, welterweight, light-welterweight, lightweight and light-flyweight weight classes in Trabzon.
London 2012 Olympians Darren O’Neill, John Joe Nevin and Michael Conlan are included in the 13-strong squad for the training camp at the Olympic Complex in Kiev.
Katie Taylor, who is meeting two American opponents in Cork and Waterford this weekend, Tyrone McCullagh and Chris Phelan will join the Irish squad in Kiev next Monday.
Taylor, the current AIBA World lightweight champion, is preparing for the 7th AIBA World Women’s Championships and only Olympic qualifier for female boxers which officially begin at the Olympic Stadium in Quihuangdao, China on May 9th.
The Ukrainian training camp is Ireland’s third this year as the Elite squad have also had camps at the Irish Army base at the Curragh in Kildare and in Hennef, Germany.
Ireland also competed in the 39th Chemistry Cup in Germany earlier this month, winning one gold and four bronze medals.
The Irish squad will travel directly to Trabzon from the Ukraine ahead of the AIBA Olympic qualifying event.
