Dean and Levan’s Belfast Dust-up

With so many one-sided international contests making up the undercard of Irish fighting events, those lucky enough to be in attendance last week at the Gleann boxing club in Belfast got an extra sized serving of what’s to frequently omitted from Irish boxing.

Manchester based Dubliner Dean Byrne 14-0 (KO6) spent last week in Belfast as sparing partner to Gary Hyde’s Georgian prospect Levan Ghvamichava 4-0 (KO3), who is due to undertake his fifth professional bout in the coming weeks.

Cork based promoter Gary Hyde could well implement an entrance fee should he decided again at any stage to use Byrne as part of Levan’s fight preparation.

As sparing goes it had a somewhat disruptive effect on the Paul and Sean McCullagh run gym, the click and thump omitted by the skipping and punch bag sessions fell to silence, this was a pugilistic presentation they just had to see and no one could blame them.

Delivered at a fierce pace, the dominance swayed back and forth between to fighters not willing to yield on inch. As the rounds went on two things became very clear, the first how surprised a layperson would be to learn that Levan a former amateur star has fought as a professional on just four occasions, and the second being should these two cross swords in the public arena, it will provide one hell of a spectacle.

Following his Georgian dust-up Dean “Irish Lightning” Byrne spoke with Greenjab.ie about a number of subjects including his opinion on Levan Ghvamichava and Willie Casey who is also now part of the Gary Hyde stable training at the Belfast Gym.

Deano also talked about his own frustration at seeing is planned debut under Frank Warren being cancelled at the last minute and hopes to put his extended run of inactivity to an end soon.
