The Central Area lightweight title is the physical prize on offer but the winner will also earn the right to face either Hull’s Tommy Coyle or his to be announced opponent for the vacant English belt in Hull in September. Alternatively the winner could fill in for Martin Gethin, who was set to be the original opponent, anyway.
Elfidh returned back to boxing in style with a win over the highly-rated former ABA champion Joe Hughes earlier this year in Sheffield. Elfidh had been out of the ring for two and half years after the birth of his daughter and told Boxing-Ireland.com that he re-entered the ring to be challenged.
“I wanted Stefy Bull (his manager) to get me in with anybody,” said Elfidh.
“We took the fight with Hughes at one week’s notice, he put me down in the first ten seconds and I still got up and beat him.
“I thought it’d be interesting to come back to the sport now and see how I faired with the prospects and so far, so good.”
Farrell, like Elfidh is unbeaten. Elfidh from seven and Farrell from twelve. The latter will be backed heaviest at the De Vere Whites Hotel, next to Bolton Wanderers’ Reebok Stadium. His nickname may be ‘vicious’ but Elfidh has no fears about him.
“From what I’ve seen on Youtube, he’s a plastic Ricky Hatton and he’s already looking beyond me which is the worst thing he could ever do,” continued Elfidh, who was used as Frankie Gavin’s sparring partner ahead of the Beijing Olympics.
“I know Ricky used to promote him and he doesn’t just take anybody on but this is the first time he’s fighting somebody who isn’t a journeyman.
“I’ve taken fights with unbeaten people before and always came through with the win and going to his hometown doesn’t faze me either. Not one bit.”
